It comes from the 25th lesson in an 1869 rudiment book (<em>Drum and Fife Instructor<\/em>) and is one of the original 26 drum rudiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson 25 consists of three alternating 16th notes. Every three-note grouping starts with a drag, and the third note has an accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know how to play the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/single-stroke-roll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single stroke roll<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/drag-ruff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drag<\/a>, you should be able to get a hang of this rudiment pretty quickly. The lesson 25 also isn\u2019t that far off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/single-drag-tap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">single drag tap<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no rhythmic value to a grace note, so it\u2019s up to you to decide how much space you want to leave between the drag and the primary note. Be sure to leave very little space between the grace notes and the primary note, and keep the drumstick low before playing the drag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another challenge is getting two clean strokes at low volume. But you shouldn\u2019t go click-free for long. Don\u2019t just say \u201cit\u2019s good enough\u201d. Try to set up a practice pad and a snare stand in front of a full length mirror if you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to notice if you\u2019re gripping your sticks too hard, or if your stick height doesn\u2019t look right. Use your reflection as a window into how you\u2019re doing.
