Have you been drumming less lately? How can you balance fatherhood and \u2018drummerhood\u2019 without dropping the ball in other important areas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to make time for the things you love, even when you have your hands full with work and family. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2863117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pursuing leisure activities can lower stress and blood pressure<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/beat\/8-health-benefits\/\">drumming also improves mental and physical health<\/a>. All of these benefits can benefit multiple areas of your life. More energy and better moods? Sign us up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the trick, of course, is how you can \u2018make time\u2019 when you don\u2019t have time. Firstly, be realistic and honest with yourself: you probably don\u2019t have space in your schedule for daily five-hour shed sessions. But you could allocate 30 minutes in the early evening for practicing drums instead of taking 30 minutes to zone out on your phone before bed. That 30 (or even 15) minutes is better than nothing. And if you only have five minutes a day to run through a song or exercise, that\u2019s a great start. Don\u2019t forget to set a reminder in your calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drummer dad Kyle recommends practicing &#8220;on the go&#8221; if you must: &#8220;I always have a practice pad in my car for when my son has soccer practice or theater school. Take advantage of that time to practice while supporting your kids!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-can-you-keep-drum-volume-down-at-home\">How can you keep drum volume down at home?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your family is trying to sleep or relax &#8211; or if they\u2019re sensitive to noise in general &#8211; drumming isn\u2019t going to make them nearly as happy as it makes you. A cheap solution is throwing old T-shirts or towels over each tom and snare and stuffing the bass drum to capacity with blankets. You\u2019ll lose a lot of the rebound, so be careful not to strain too hard when you\u2019re playing. You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/RyPNNy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buy mesh heads<\/a>, the type many drummers use when converting sets from acoustic to electronic, or <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/mgg3MX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mutes that go on each drum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/x993M5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cymbals<\/a> &#8211; the worst offenders &#8211; are notoriously difficult to mute, unless you\u2019ve bought low-volume ones. To reduce some sustain, you can try using gaffer tape &#8211; which doesn\u2019t usually leave any residue &#8211; or buy a specialized cymbal mute (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=cymbomute&amp;ref=nb_sb_noss_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like these Cymbomutes<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/EaaXN4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Soundoffs<\/a>, which are effective and not too expensive). You can also try playing more softly or using sticks that are smaller or designed for low-volume environments (<a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/LPayWa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like these<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still too loud? Invest in some soundproofing and sound absorption materials. Surround your kit with carpets, curtains, and foam panels. If you have the space and resources, try building an isolation room around your drums. There are tons of great tutorials on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe class=\"email-form-include-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drumeo.com\/weeklyemail\" frameborder=\"none\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other quiet drumming options<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/yRR3N2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electronic kit<\/a> solves most volume issues that come with acoustic drums &#8211; and it\u2019s usually much smaller. Keep in mind that the kick pad can still be audible and can vibrate through floors and walls, and that mesh heads will be quieter than rubber pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have the funds or the space for an electronic kit, you can get a <a href=\"https:\/\/imp.i114863.net\/VyyePE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">practice pad kit<\/a>, which is exactly what it sounds like: a set of practice pads set up in a typical drum set configuration. Whether that means inviting them to watch you jam, giving them lessons, or letting them wail away on the kit, how you include them is up to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drummer dad Tyson says, &#8220;I\u2019ve&nbsp;found that sharing my love for music &#8211; but not <em>pushing <\/em>my love for music &#8211; has made my daughter into an incredibly well rounded music lover, and a great source for new musical inspiration!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you go any further, make sure your kids (and you) have proper hearing protection. You can teach them rhythm games and show them a few episodes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCxUGWH5jy4iCg-jPDv_3ZiA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this show that was created just to get kids excited about playing drums<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drummer dad Jared offers this advice: &#8220;I\u2019m\u00a0not the best teacher for my kids.\u00a0They learn better from seeking out their own education through Drumeo or YouTube, or another private teacher. Another thing I try to focus on, especially when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0young, is always keeping it fun.\u00a0They\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0understand the short term pain, long term gain.\u00a0It has to always be fun as they compare the activity to very rewarding gamified experiences.\u00a0This is why we play songs they know well. I try and make a game of it.\u00a0My boys are super competitive so if we do challenges and earn points, they are more likely to keep going.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your kids see you doing something you love, they\u2019ll feel more connected to you and maybe be inspired to follow in their dad\u2019s footsteps.
