Thank you Jared for this clear tutorial. I’ve been developing my French grip technique for several years now (having spent a great deal of my drumming life focused on German and American grip, due to drum line…which isn’t bad, but I just never realized the advantage of the French grip because it always felt like the sicks were going to fly out of my hands). But, you are absolutely right how finger control will change everything. Finger control in this fashion has greatly improved my relaxation behind the kit and has allowed to be able to express even greater dynamic detail in my playing. I hate to be the teacher that just puts on a video during class, but this might have to be one of those times where I tell a student, “Just watch this video.” LOL!

This is a great lesson on an important, often overlooked issue.
@ Jared: In this context: have you ever had questions related to the application of the different matched grips, i.e. German grip, French grip and American grip and their blending with each other in varying drumming situations?
This could be an interesting subject for a lesson, I believe.

What about traditional grip left hand? I have an issue with left hand index finger that makes me play mostly traditional grip.
